What to look for:

  • the bill of a female Surf Scoter is larger, bulkier and more unfeathered
  • the bill of a female White-winged Scoter is sleeker, with a larger feathered top section
  • the head of a female Black Scoter is more rounded with a conspicuous dark crown and lighter cheek patch

What to look for:

  • all mergansers exhibit a slim, dart-like profile in flight
  • males: black heads with white collar
  • females: brown head, lacks the little white chin patch of female Common Mergansers
