Leader Profile: Deal
Ed Deal
Field Trip Leader

It would seem logical for someone who grew up in Audubon, New Jersey, to become a birder, but it wasn’t a direct route for Ed Deal. He always had an interest in natural history but didn’t become hooked on birding until he moved out west and took Bud Anderson’s Introduction to Hawk ID class in 1991. "I have gone on to get a hawk-banding permit and have banded fall migrants in the Washington Cascades, Nevada, New Jersey, and the Florida Keys," comments Ed.

Ed and Martin Muller have led 25 half-day trips in Seattle looking for Peregrines. He also leads more general birding field trips that require a bit of hiking stamina to places such as Fremont Lookout at Mt. Rainier, the Umptanum Creek Trail in Yakima Canyon, and Iron Bear Peak in the Swauk Pass area.

Ed’s benchmark bird, the bird that really got him hooked? "A close encounter with an Ornate Hawk Eagle at Chan Chich Lodge in Belize ranks way up there!" he exclaims.
