Field Trip Leader
Michael Flemming

If you see someone zipping down a country road with a scope strapped to his Honda motorcycle, it may well be Michael Fleming. A Seattle native, Michael became interested in birding just four years ago on one of his motorcycle camping trips. He had casually stuffed a birding book into his bag as he packed up for the trip. "I saw a Western Tanager, and that did it!" he recalls.

Though he hasn’t really used his degree in wildlife biology, he finds that a few of his birding skills, such as an eye for detail and a knack for research, transfer over to his day job where he runs background checks on prospective employees for companies.

He completed the Master Birder course this year, and has co-led a few field trips to Eastern Washington, one of his favorite places to bird in the spring.

There are no other birders in his family, although one of his brothers is a logger and outside all the time. "I’m working on him," says Michael.
