Leader Profile: Wood
Dr. Fran Wood
Field Trip Leader

Growing up in Philadelphia with a father and an uncle who were birders, Fran didn’t really get hooked until he was in medical school in Boston. "A couple friends and I would take a breather from our studies, grab binocs and a bird book, and head out to Fenway Park on Sunday afternoon," he recalls.

Fran moved to Seattle in 1960 where he has devoted 40 years to teaching endocrinology and patient care at the University of Washington Medical School, along with practicing in those fields at the UW Medical Center, Harborview, and Providence Hospitals. Now that he is semi-retired, he has more time for leading field trips and bird walks for new members.

Fran’s easy-going trips are perfect for beginners, but nearly anyone will enjoy an outing with this good-natured teacher. Occasionally a member brings a nonmember guest along on a field trip. "We whet their appetites, then slip a little snare around their ankles and get them to join Audubon," he quips.
