Resolutions  

The following is a full listing of the formal resolutions Seattle Audubon has taken on conservation issues back to 1997, and a partial listing of resolutions prior to that year.

2010
2009
  • Nov-09: Public Lands Privatization & Commercialization - Seattle Audubon supports the long term protection of our wildlife and natural resources by opposing the privatization or commercialization of these resources.
  • Nov-09: WSACC Radar Ridge Opposition - Seattle Audubon joins the other 25 chapters of Washington State Audubon's to oppose the construction of Radar Ridge wind energy project to ensure long term protection of the Marbled Murrelet.
  • Nov-09: WSACC: Hanford Reach Land Transfer - Seattle Audubon joins the other 25 chapters of Washington State Audubon's to support the transfer of Department of Energy lands to Hanford Reach National Monument. 
  • Nov-09: WSACC National Research Park Funding - Seattle Audubon joins the other 25 chapters of Washington State Audubon's to support the passage of Senate HR 2729 to ensure adequate funding for Hanford reach and several other National Research Parks.
  • Nov-09: WSACC Lead Fishing Tackle Ban - Seattle Audubon joins the other 25 chapters of Washington State Audubon's to support the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife proposed rule change to ban lead fishing tackle on Common Loon territorial lakes and a concept of a statewide ban on this tackle for wintering and nesting loons. 
2008
  • Sept-08: Transportation - Seattle Audubon supports the development and implementation of alternative transportation systems that prioritize environmental performance and sustainability, supporting the Sound Transit 15-year mass transit expansion package, and opposing I-985, the "Reduce Traffic Congestion" initiative.
  • Sept-08: Seattle Parks For All - Seattle Audubon supports the City of Seattle Parks for All Levy (Proposition 2) that will provide $148 million for green spaces and parks in Seattle.
  • May-08: Green Jobs / Good Jobs Endorsement - Seattle Audubon endorses the Green Jobs/Good Jobs Event being sponsored by the Washington Blue-Green Alliance on June 21, 2008.
  • May-08: Save Our Swifts Campaign - Seattle Audubon will act to protect these birds at risk by participating in the Save Our Swifts Campaign with Pilchuck Audubon, Eastside Audubon, WDFW, PAWS, and other partners. 
  • Apr-08: Spotted Owl Conservation - Primary emphasis for Northern Spotted Owl recovery should continue to be on habitat management, presrvation and enhancement.
  • Feb-08: Shade Coffee Campaign Restructuring - Seattle Audubon and the NW Shade Coffee Campaign will eliminate the current Campaign Membership Program; and will limit the use of the campaign logo almost exclusively to Campaign publications and take steps to ensure that past members remove Campaign logos from coffee, promotional products, and publications.
2007
  • Apr-07: Marbled Murrelet Intervention - We agree to join AFRC's suit against U.S. Fish and Wildlife as intervenors.
  • Mar-07: Paper Usage - Seattle Audubon Society will phase out the use of paper that includes non-FSC virgin fiber.
  • Mar-07: 520 Replacement Project - We will support efforts that address concerns about the impacts to wetlands and wildlife, especially at Forest and Marsh Islands in the Washington Park Arboretum. A clear mitigation and monitoring plan and fair review of all project alternatives are needed.
  • Mar-07: Sustainable Cork Usage - Endorses the use of sustainable cork products to protect migratory bird habitat.
2006
  • Jan-06: Spotted Owl Litigation - Seattle Audubon Society will issue another 60-day notice and pursue litigation against Weyerhaeuser, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and the Washington Forest Practices Board to protect individual owl circles and to improve state regulations for logging in owl habitat.
2005
  • Dec-05: Upholding Marbled Murrelet's status - Seattle Audubon Society declares itself to be a co-plaintiff in any litigation brought by Earthjustice attorneys to challenge a delisting of the three state population of MAMU by the USFWS.
  • July-05: Takings Resolution - to joins in opposing a takings initiative similar to Measure 37 being run in Washington, and will oppose such an initiative if it is filed.
2004
  • Sept-04: FSC Lumber Resolution - to protect birds in this at-risk habitat and increase public awareness by embarking on a campaign, along with the Washington Environmental Council, Northwest Ecosystem Alliance and other potential partners to educate our members about the use of FSC certified lumber throughout our membership area.
2003
  • Mar-03: Invasive Species Resolution - to support efforts that prevent invasive species introduction as well as control and eradicate species that have become established.
  • Mar-03: Sustainable State Forests - authorizes Seattle Audubon to promote truly sustainable logging practices on state forest and trust lands to protect important bird habitat throughout the state of Washington.
2002
  • Oct-02: Endorsement of Seattle Initiative 80 - endorses Yes for Seattle ~ Seattle Initiative 80, and will educate its Seattle members about the issues related to this Initiative.
  • Oct-02: Endorsement of the Americans For National Parks Coalition - Seattle Audubon's official endorsement of this campaign and coalition.
  • Aug-02: Official Opposition to Initiative I-776 - authorizes the Seattle Audubon Society to oppose I-776. SAS will educate and urge its members to vote against it.
  • Jun-02: Spotted Owl Lawsuit - Authorizes Seattle Audubon to join litigation to intervene on behalf of critical habitat for the Spotted Owl
  • Jun-02: Marbled Murrelet Lawsuit - Authorizes Seattle Audubon to join litigation to intervene on behalf of critical habitat for Snowy Plover
  • Jun-02: Critical Habitat - Establishes commitment to support critical habitat for threatened and endangered species.
  • May-02: Snowy Plover Lawsuit - Authorizes Seattle Audubon to join litigation to intervene on behalf of critical habitat for Snowy Plover
  • Apr-02: Field Lighting Resolution - Endorses a full EIS for lighting projects with impacts in environmentally critical areas to adequately adress the biological consequences
2001
  • Oct-01: Expansion of I-405 - Supports the thrust of the Sensible Solutions for I-405’s “Triple Win Plan” to protect urban habitat. Includes trip reduction, transit improvements, ‘smart growth,’ and focused investments at key traffic choke points.
  • Sep-01: Trade & Development & the Environment - General policy addressing impact on birds and the environment & endorsing principles by which environmental issues can be addressed
  • Aug-01: Pesticides and Other Toxic Chemicals - Encourages better evaluation & monitoring; reducing exposure; safer agricultural/land practices; & eliminating PBTs Pesticides
  • Jun-01: Seattle I-63, Water for Salmon - Encourages water conservation for environmental benefits
  • Jun-01: Inert Ingredients in Pesticides - Authorized Seattle Audubon  to sign on letter to WA Attorney General's Office, requesting them to urge the US EPA to require labeling of all inert ingredients
  • May-01: Snoqualmie River Valley Antenna Farm - Resolution Calls for full EIS on radio tower project or project abandonment
  • Mar-01: The Clean Water Investment Act - Supports initiative to increase funding for water quality/quantity projects in rural areas
  • Mar-01: Non-Highway & Off-Road Vehicle Activities (NOVA) Program - Supports NOVA reform bill and position of WA Trails Assoc. Opposes development of ORV trails in roadless areas.
  • Feb-01: Model Toxics Control Act - Sign amicus brief prepared by WEC to protest Thurston Co. ruling that would limit authority of MTCA
  • Feb-01: One-Third for Choices - Endorses exploration of alternatives to road-building
  • Feb-01: NW Ancient Forests Campaign - Join coalition to develop program to stop old-growth logging from national forests in S. WA
2000
  • Oct-00: City of Lake Forest Park Proposition No. 1 - Provide funding for parks and open space, to improve wildlife habitat
  • Sep-00: Support Seattle Pro-Parks Levy - Would provide funding to parks, including Seward Park
  • Sep-00: Oppose I-745 - Would transfer 90% of all transportation funds to road building
  • Apr-00: China - Three Gorges Dam Investment Protest - Write letter to Lehman Bros. Protesting their underwriting of Dam due to environmental and cultural impacts; do not remove Martin Miller funds
  • Apr-00: Gypsy Moth Spraying - Opposes aerial spraying in Ballard & Magnolia; requests improved public input
  • Feb-00: Cascades Conservation Partnership - Join CCP and Steering Committee to acquire private lands in I-90 corridor (not enough lands to exchange)
1999
  • Dec-99: Caspian Tern Lawsuit - Authorizes Seattle Audubon to join litigation to require federal agencies to prepare EIS for relocation of terns in Columbia River
  • Dec-99: Sustainable Agriculture and Farmland - Supports the preservation of farmland and promotes sustainable agricultural practices
  • Nov-99: Settlement Agreement Regarding I-90 Land Exchange - Authorizes Board to enter into Settlement Agreement (aka Plum Creek Settlement Agreement)
  • Nov-99: PCC Farmland Fund - Establishes relationship with PCC's Farmland Fund and supports the role of the Fund to protect ecologically significant lands
  • Oct-99: State I-696 "The Ban Initiative" - Opposes I-696, which would prohibit certain commercial fishing methods & gear to protect sealife
  • Aug-99: People's Lodge at Discovery Park - Comments on DEIS re: scope, size Aug-99: I-90 Land Exchange Administrative Appeal - Recommends Seattle Audubon sign appeal, symbolic to reform land exchanges
  • Jun-99: WTO -Global Free Logging Agreement - Opposes WTO agreement because it would weaken environmental regs.
  • Apr-99: Cherry Valley Quarry - Opposes the Duvall Rock Mine Proposals to protect adjacent property's habitat and to oppose the destruction of habitat within proposed grounds
1998
  • Nov-98: Washington Park Arboretum Plan - Opposes draft plan based on failure to address protection of shorelines, critical areas, wetlands
  • Nov-98: Endorsement of Campaign for the NW Support Coalition supporting Salmon Recovery called People's Pledge for Wild Salmon
  • Aug-98: Livable Communities Coalition - Supports mission & goals, & joins Coalition. Participate in working group on habitat and open space.
  • Jun-98: End Commercial Logging on Federal Lands - Support end to logging and economic support for depressed timber communities
  • May-98: End Logging in Cedar River Watershed - Support Habitat Conservation Plan subject to logging ban, habitat protection
  • Apr-98: US Dept. of Agriculture Organic Standards - Oppose proposed regs for production/labeling of organic foods
1997
  • Sep-97: Arboretum Lakeside Trail - Opposes alternatives that degrade wetland habitats
  • Sep-97: Resident Canada Geese - Supports public ed, research, egg addling. Opposes lethal control w/o documented evidence and public ed
  • Aug-97: Global Climate Change - Supports efforts to reduce global warming gases, including renewable energy and transportation
  • Aug-97: Marine Ecosystems & Sanctuaries - Supports protection of marine ecosystems and resources, establishment of National Marine Sanctuary in NW Straits.
  • Aug-97: Wild Salmon Resolution - Supports protection of wild salmonids & habitat, reduction of activities wh/ impact them
  • Jun-97: Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project - Opposed DEIS proposal that might increase logging and grazing on public lands. Supports protection of habitat, protection of water quality.
  • May-97: Off-Leash Dog Area Position - Opposes placement of off-leash areas in sensitive areas; supports full EIS before made permanent in any Seattle Park
  • Mar-97: Snoqualmie Falls Preservation - Endorses Spirit of the Falls Mission - to restore natural flows over falls and establishment of a public park
  • Mar-97: Duwamish Coalition Habitation Restoration Plan - Endorses common vision and framework, with goal of enhancing habitat diversity and abundance of fish & wildlife while maintaining a healthy working waterfront
  • Mar-97: National Wildlife Refuges - Supports management to protect & conserve fish & wildlife. Other uses should be thoroughly evaluated & not undertaken at expense of fish & wildlife
Prior to 1997
  • Oct-94: South Carnation Marsh and King County Env. Management Division Project - Designates boundaries of South Carnation Marsh property as a wildlife sanctuary and establishes the role of Seattle Audubon in management decisions
  • Apr-93: Snoqualmie Falls Preservation Preservation Project - Supports the Snoqualmie Tribe and the Falls Preservation Project in their efforts to prevent further development at the Falls
  • Jun-92: McNeil Island - Reaffirms Seattle Audubon's support for the McNeil Island transfer deed
  • Sep-91: NW Ancient Forests - Supports S.1536, HR. 842 and others to support an ecosystem approach to our ancient forests
  • Mar-91: Opposes Pres. Bush's energy plan  - Supports the proposal from National Audubon Opposes President Bush's two-point energy plan and calls for more conservation and research and development
  • Jul-87: Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing - Opposes the Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program until adequate scientific study has been completed
  • Jun-87: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - Endorses HR 89, which would designate the refuge as a wilderness area, thus barring future oil exploration
  • Apr-87: Northern Spotted Owl Designation - Submit a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate the Northern Spotted Owl as an endangered species
  • Mar-87: House Bill 210 - Endorses State House Bill 210 which would protect sensitive, threatened and endangered plants and animals in WA State
  • Dec-86: McNeil Island - Opposes the permitting for porposed net pen projects on McNeil Island and encourages the designation of the island as a Natural Area Preserve
  • May-86: Discovery Park Sewage Plant - Urges expansion of existing sewage treatment plant rather than proposed alternatives
  • May-86: Discovery Park - Encourages Metro Council to adopt a plan that minimizes industrial activities within Discovery Park
  • Apr-86: Old Growth Protection - Supports the declaration of the remaining old growth forests as non-renewable resources and calls for a moratorium on the logging of such forests; also calls for cooperative studies to find alternative solutions to resultant job losses
  • Mar-86: Bowerman Basin NWR - Support the establishment of Bowerman Basin/Point National Wildlife Refuge in Grays Harbor
  • Sep-81: Henry Pier Development - Opposes the development of the Henry Pier in Lake Union due to loss of jobs and sea habitat
  • Sep-81: Shorelines Use - Supports the preservation of shorelines for a variety of uses: developed shorelines for maritime and commercial fishing; increased acquisition of shorelines for public access; and further cooperation on shorelines rules between state and local agencies
