Violet-green Swallow House

Violet-green Swallow House
The Violet-green Swallow is the swallow most likely to be seen in urban areas within Washington’s forested zones. These swallows nest in forested mountains of the west in tree cavities, cliffs, buildings, and old woodpecker holes. Boxes placed on large trees in semi-open woodland will attract them, if you have the right habitat, especially near open-water areas where their food source is abundant. The Violet-green Swallow lays four or five white eggs, which hatch after about two weeks of incubation. The young leave the nest in about three weeks. Nest boxes are most effective when clustered in groups of three or four, mounted 5-15 feet from the ground on a large tree.
